Functional Richness and Resilience in Coral Reef Communities

چکیده

Within the Anthropocene functional diversity of coral communities is changing rapidly, putting resilience many reef ecosystems in jeopardy. A better understanding relationship between and could reveal practical ways to achieve increased resilience. However, manipulating experimentally challenging, consequently links diversity, resilience, ecosystem functioning remain obscure. We used an ecologically detailed agent-based model conduct a virtual experiment which was manipulated over entire trait space scleractinian corals. Using imputed dataset 798 species eight key traits, we assembled 245 functionally distinct communities, subjected cyclone bleaching event. then measured four different aspects their quantified for each measure respective effect ( i ) richness (FRic), ii community-weighted means (CWM) types trait: effect, resistance, recovery, competitive. FRic represents volume occupied by community space, while CWM indicates location communities’ centroid space. found significant positive on three measures resilience: with higher recovered surface cover faster had more rugosity 10 years after disturbances. In contrast, resistance community—i.e., capacity maintain when disturbances—was independent determined primarily traits. By analyzing dynamics trade-offs, show that increases via selection insurance effects due presence competitive i.e., those highly dominant contribute most complexity habitat recover quickly from Building results our correlation analysis, discuss potential serve as proxy present strategy can provide direction on-going restoration efforts, pave way sustaining context rapid global change.

Prediction of Bleaching in Coral Reef Communities Using a Temperature Index(Southern and northern Persian Gulf)

Sea surface temperature is one of the most effective physical parameters that affects the health of coral reefs communities.High frequency of the bleaching phenomenon has extensively occurred in the Persian Gulf in the recent years due to the increase in temperature and increased changes in the sea surface temperature (SST) resulting in great mortality in the coral communities. The aim of this ...

Building coral reef resilience through assisted evolution.

The genetic enhancement of wild animals and plants for characteristics that benefit human populations has been practiced for thousands of years, resulting in impressive improvements in commercially valuable species. Despite these benefits, genetic manipulations are rarely considered for noncommercial purposes, such as conservation and restoration initiatives. Over the last century, humans have ...

Influence of live coral cover on coral-reef fish communities

The effect of percentage live coral cover on the number of fish species and individuals was determined by censusing fish from a series of reefs of comparable structural complexity, but with different proportions of live coral, in the lagoon of Mataiva Atoll, Tuamotu Archipelago. Regression analysis showed that there was a highly significant (p < 0.001) positive relationship between live coral c...

Ocean acidification and warming will lower coral reef resilience

Ocean warming and acidification from increasing levels of atmospheric CO2 represent major global threats to coral reefs, and are in many regions exacerbated by local-scale disturbances such as overfishing and nutrient enrichment. Our understanding of global threats and local-scale disturbances on reefs is growing, but their relative contribution to reef resilience and vulnerability in the futur...

Coral Reef Resilience, Tipping Points and the Strength of Herbivory

Coral reefs increasingly are undergoing transitions from coral to macroalgal dominance. Although the functional roles of reef herbivores in controlling algae are becoming better understood, identifying possible tipping points in the herbivory-macroalgae relationships has remained a challenge. Assessment of where any coral reef ecosystem lies in relation to the coral-to-macroalgae tipping point ...
